- How did you get started in horticulture?

I used to be a bank manager in a big High Street bank and was made redundant. I like gardening and art and so decided to retrain to do a job I love as opposed to just one where you earn money. I started an HNC garden design course in 2008 at Pershore College and the best way to increase my knowledge while studying was to work at a garden centre and Webbs is the largest one in the Midlands.

- What advice would you give to others starting out?

You have to love it because it is not the best paid job in the world. But if you love it, it is very rewarding.

- What does your typical day involve?

I spend half the week as a plant adviser at Webbs and the other half building up clients for design work.

- What is the best part of your job?

The thing I enjoy most is being able to impart knowledge I have gained to other people and being able to help them.

- And the worst?

During the winter is reached minus 15 during the day which was not much fun.

What does the future hold?

My work at Webbs enables me to keep up to date with trends, which is essential. In the meantime, I am continuing my studies at Pershore on the RHS programme and have launched my own website www.lcjgardendesigns.com. The joy about gardening is that there is always something new to learn.
